nytelcom: It has worked fine for me (I'm 6'1", 185 lbs and less than 10% body fat), but then I have not changed my routine much in many years, so you may very well know of a better way. My main point is not how many reps you do. I find that 8-15, as long as I work each set to failure, works for me. However I find that the most important thing is using proper form, using compund exercises (squats, presses, dead lifts etc…) and working out very intensely. I would be interested in learing more about your routine - please explain. (and please refrain from insults - there's no reason for that now is there?)

To build muscle you should work out intensely with heavy weights. You should use a weight that allows you to do 8-15 reps per set for 4-5 sets per body part. Take each set to absolute failure. Most trainers suggest a split routine: work chest, shoulders and triceps one day, then back and biceps the next day. The rest a day or 2. Then do legs the next time, then chest, shoulders and triceps again etc…. Your muscles should be sore for at least a day or 2 after a workout and you should not work the sore muscles again until the soreness is gone. Rest is as important as good workouts. Take lots of days off from the gym and work out really intensely when you are there.
Also, you should concentrate mostly on exercises that work more than one muscle group (squats, bench press, dead lifts and rows and pull-ups) and always work the big muscles (back, thighs, chest). Those are the hardest exercises and should form the core of every workout: squats and dead lifts for your leg day workout, bench press for chest, shoulders and triceps and rows and pull-ups for back.
I like doing push-ups, but you should do them as part of your chest, shoulders and triceps routine. If you workout as intensely as you should, one day per week for each body part should be enough.
In addition to lots of rest between workouts, you need to eat, eat, eat. You won't gain weight without eating lots of good food, especially protein.

I was (and still am) a lawyer. I am not an elitist and I have never felt that there is any correlation between intelligence and one's level of education. I have never presumed myself to be smarter than anyone else. Nevertheless, I was regarded with great suspicion and a certain amount of fear by the brothers, especially the elders. This was unfortunate because I genuinely liked some of the brothers and have known many janitors who are more intelligent than many lawyers. Sadly, however, it was also clear that the brains of many once intelligent folks had atrophied from lack of use. The worst part of the WT's anti-intellectualism is not the fact that few JWs achieve higher education (it is not necessary to attend college or university to be educated), but the fact that so many deprive themselves of opportunities to learn independently.

As an activist in the struggle against U.S. imperialism, I am troubled by the flippant tone of this thread. I am even more troubled by the fact that no American women have expressed interest in buying me.

Bush's speech -- I'll be the first to admit...
by Seeker in...it was an effective speech.
i was impressed, and thought it only fair to say so here given the recent political discussions.

I am not suprised at the "news" coverage. As Seeker correctly pointed out, the major news media in the U.S. are owned by the same large coporations which fund (own) the Republican and Democratic parties. In "Manufacturing Consent" Noam Chomsky described the way the U.S. media work together with their corporate owners to tell only one side of the story. One of the greatest achievements of the American ruling class is to convince Americans that they do not have propaganda in their country.
The goal of the coming war? Public support for an ongoing campaign against those whom the U.S. declares "terrorists", while the U.S. continues to support repressive dictatorships and terrorists who support U.S. foreign policy objectives. This has nothing to do with "freedom" or democracy.

Why the world must care about anti-US terrorism
by LDH inmade this point on another post.. i have heard repeatedly that what happened in nyc doesn't concern the rest of the world.. .
but, while watching a show on tlc last night, some really made the issue clear about whether the rest of the world needs to be involved.. they interviewed a high-ranking government official in nairobi, kenya.. this man was reminiscing on the fact that during the bombing attacks on the us embassy in 1998, osama bin laden was willing to sacrifice 288 kenyan lives to kill just 12 americans.
over 5,000 were wounded.

Far, far more people have died as a result of U.S. sponsored terrorism and death squads and U.S. supported dictatorships than have died as a result of Islamic or Arab terrorism. Much of the world is now very close to being dragged into a war which could well spiral out of control. I care very much about the loss of innocent lives in the WTC attack. It was an evil act by very twisted people. But to ignore the fact that U.S. foreign policy has brought (and continues to bring) massive suffering to much of the world, and to ignore the fact that these policies engender outrage and anger which will lead some to respond by attacking innocent Americans, is dangerously naive. Terrorism by all sides must be stopped, but the answer is not more violence. If Americans want to go on believing the absurd lie that their foreign policy promotes freedom and democracy rather than oppression and violence, and are not prepared to look seriously in their own government's complicity in the cycle of violence, they should not expect widespread support in a one-sided, self-serving "war on terrorism".

HIT with a Hammer
by Amazing inin conjunction with my appeal for calm, i might add that when we are working on a construction project and hit our thumb with the hammer, we might scream, cuss, and throw the hammer at something out of a sense of anger with the event and with ourselevs.. if my co-wroker hits me with the hammer, then i might turn and take a swing at him out of an immediate reactive sense to defend myself.
likely, i might cuss him out, scream, and threaten.. as the pain subsides, i might then start to calm, and look at what happened and determine needs to take place.
i could accept an apology and move on, or if i thought it was deliberate action on his part, i might take it to the boss and get some sense of justice.. our nation, and really all good nations, were hit with a hard hammer tuesday.

Amazing, I really liked your Appeal for Calm. Although sadly I do not share your confidence that the U.S. government and NATO will act rationally and not take action resulting in many more civilian deaths on both sides (war is simply too profitable for the big business interests which run the U.S., and the media have whipped the American public into such a frenzy that they are demanding war) I am always encouraged when I see people like you take the time to calmly think things through and revise their opinions accordingly. I am afraid it will take many more years and many more innocent lives, but I believe that eventually people like you and the other rational peace-loving people who have posted on this Board will be the majority.

Powerful. I wish every American news organization would give priority coverage to this message, and that every American would read it. It's so important that this rational point of view prevail in the debate now underway as to how America should react to this atrocity.
